Physical Description Male: mostly all black save for a white patch on the flank which extends on the underwing as a spur; pale bar on upper wing; large red sac on the front of the throat which is inflated during courtship.

Female: Black head and neck with a white collar and breast as well as a spur extending on the underwing; narrow red ring around the eye.
Biology and Life History One egg is laid, taking 6-7 weeks to hatch. Fledglings remain in the nest for another 6 months or so until they are fledged but are cared for by the parents for quite a long time after that.
Habitat and Ecology Breeds on remote islands, nesting in trees.
Distribution Common in tropical seas; most likely to be seen from the mainland prior to the onset of a tropical cyclone, and once this abates, disappears again.
